It is located on the island of Honshu and 17 percent of the prefecture's land area are designated as natural parks. Yamagata City is the capital of Yamagata prefecture. Yamagata City is located in the southeast part of Yamagata Prefecture. Mount Zao is located in Yamagata City, which has an onsen town nearby. Yamagata City was the center of power during the Sengoku Period, and the Mogami clan ruled from Yamagata Castle.
Prefecture Name Origins
Yamagata Prefecture got its name from the Wamyoruijyuushou, a text dating from the early Heian Period (794-1185). In this text, the southern part of present-day Yamagata City was called 山方 (Yamagata). The origins of this name are unknown, but there is a theory that it is due to the mountains Zao and Ryuuzan being nearby.
