Iwate Prefecture
Iwate
Iwate Prefecture (jp. 岩手県. rmj. iwate-ken. tohoku region), the name Iwate comes from Iwa (岩) Boulder, Te (手) Hand. It is located on the island of Honshu and is the easternmost point of Honshu, the main island of Japan. Iwate is also home to the Ou Mountains, the longest mountain range in Japan. Iwate Prefecture offers experiences where one can enjoy nature, the offerings from land and sea, as well as shrines and temples, and other landmarks, some of which are distinguished as World Heritage Sites.
Prefecture Name Origins
The name Iwate is said to have its origins in the tale "Oni no Tegata", which has ties to the Mitsuishi (Three Rocks) Shrine in Morioka City. As the legend goes, the rocks this shrine is named after fell from Mount Iwate following an eruption. At the same time, an ogre (Oni) was tormenting the townspeople, who then prayed to the deities at Mitsuishi for protection. The deities had the oni tied to the three rocks, and the oni promised to not torment the people anymore, leaving a hand print on the rock.
Welcome to Iwate! The Prefecture of Iwate is the second-largest prefecture in Japan and offers a well-rounded experience everyone can enjoy. From scenic landscapes to unique foods local to the prefecture, as well as folk customs and traditions, Iwate is an ideal place to visit for the traveler looking to enjoy a more rural experience.
