Aomori Prefecture
Aomori
Aomori Prefecture (jp. 青森県. rmj. aomori-ken. tohoku region), the name Aomori comes from Ao (青) Blue, Mori (森) Forest. Aomori is the location of the Natural World Heritage Site of Shirakami Sanchi and also Lake Towada. Aomori Prefecture is surrounded by the sea on three sides (namely by the Sea of Japan, Mutsu Bay, and the Pacific Ocean). Aomori City is the capital of Aomori Prefecture and is ranked number one of ten of the most populated wards in Aomori Prefecture. Aomori City, along with Aomori Prefecture, is known for its outdoor activities year-round, specifically skiing in winter, and hiking, cycling, and other activities when the weather gets warmer. Aomori City is known for the Aomori Nebuta Festival, where large floats made by hand are displayed, as well as an art museum and the Aomori Museum of History, which features a collection of fishing boats.
Prefecture Name Origins
Aomori was named for its green forests (aoi mori in Japanese), a name which has its origins from the year 1624, when the Hirosaki domain (present-day Aomori City) was being established as a port city. Sadly, while the green forests still exist today, the boats that were a landmark of the ports in Aomori no longer exist.
Welcome to Aomori! The Prefecture of Aomori is home to the northernmost point of Honshu, and is located south of Hokkaido Island. In addition to being blessed with lush green forests, it is home to the archeological site Sannai Maruyama, which dates from the Jomon Period (14,000 to 300 BCE). Aomori Prefecture is divided into three regions: Tsugaru, Nanbu, and Shimokita. Each region has a different dialect.
